Native American Rehab Center
Helping People Recover from Addiction
Safe and Sound Treatment’s therapists and case managers have been trained and accredited by Generation Red Road, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting inter-generational healing through Indigenous teachings. Our goal is to provide holistic, culturally relevant addiction treatment and mental health services to Native American, Alaskan Native, and Indigenous communities.
About Generation Red Road
Generation Red Road’s mission is to revitalize and foster inter-generational healing by leveraging Indigenous teachings that bring harmony to individuals, families, and communities.
As a non-profit organization, its primary purposes include:
- Promoting its mission by offering evidence-based practices and technical assistance to Indigenous Communities.
- Ensuring accessibility of services and providing training & technical assistance both within the U.S. and internationally.
- Collaborating with stakeholders and community providers to develop program objectives and technical assistance, emphasizing the safety and well-being of the community.
The Red Road Approach (RRA) Model
The RRA Model, a holistic concept rooted in prayer as the foundation of all healing, has been in existence for 40 years. Originated by Gene Thin Elk (Sicangu Lakota) and co-developed by Rick Thomas (Isanti Dakota), the model emphasizes the importance of mutual respect between the afflicted, the therapy, and the facilitator for effective healing. This approach is deeply embedded in the Medicine Wheel, intrinsic to Native American, Alaskan Native, and Indigenous Nations.
The Indigenous values ensure balance by living cultural traditions through the Red Road. By embracing ceremonies and belief systems, individuals can find wholeness, balance, and walk the sacred Red Road of Recovery. The RRA teachings have reached various institutions, from schools and universities to prisons and corporations, and its materials are utilized globally.
Generation Red Road's Inception and Vision
Founded in 2019 by J. Carlos Rivera in Sioux Falls, SD, Generation Red Road, Inc. was established as a platform to continue the spiritual agreements, including the NextGen Recovery Program. The organization’s vision is to co-create a Red Road of Recovery philosophy that welcomes the insights of the next generation while respecting and honoring ancestral teachings.
Safe and Sound Treatment’s partnership with Generation Red Road signifies a step forward in providing culturally sensitive and holistic treatment options. Together, we aim to make a significant impact in the lives of those seeking recovery and healing within the Native American, Alaskan Native, and Indigenous communities.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Native Americans
Understanding substance abuse within the Native American community isn’t straightforward. With over 300 tribal organizations in the U.S., each with distinct cultural and social practices, substance use varies widely. For instance, the Indian Health Service data reveals that northern reservation residents have more alcohol-related diagnoses than their southern counterparts.
It’s also essential to note that only about one-third of Native Americans reside in tribal communities. This means that when studies focus solely on these communities, they miss out on the behaviors of the majority of the Native American population. Furthermore, including Alaska Natives in these studies might lead to skewed results, as they generally have higher substance abuse rates. This increase is often attributed to the challenges of maintaining cultural identities amidst rapid industrialization.
Mental Health in Native Communities
Mental health is a pressing concern in Native American communities. Reports from Mental Health America and the Urban Indian Health Institute indicate that nearly 20% of Native Americans and Alaska Natives have experienced a mental illness in the past year. Several factors contribute to this:
As a non-profit organization, its primary purposes include:
- Limited awareness of mental health issues and available treatments.
- A shortage of healthcare providers attuned to the cultural and spiritual needs of Native Americans.
- A prevalent inclination to consult spiritual healers over primary care or mental health professionals.
- Restricted access to comprehensive health insurance.
- High poverty rates making mental health treatment less accessible.
- Limited healthcare services within tribal lands and native communities.
Residential Addiction Treatment for Native Americans
Safe and Sound Treatment provides residential treatment options tailored for individuals seeking a supportive environment to focus on recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. We understand that home environments might not always be conducive to recovery due to various challenges. Upon your arrival, a comprehensive assessment will determine the optimal duration of your stay, which could range from 30 to 90 days, ensuring a personalized treatment plan.
Your initial day will be about settling in and gearing up for the recovery journey. Depending on your assessment, your daily routine might involve individual therapy sessions, group therapy, or other specialized treatments. In between sessions, you can find solace on our patio or meditate in the tranquility of your room.
Outpatient Addiction Treatment
For those who can’t commit to an extended residential stay or are in the early stages of addiction, we offer outpatient treatment services in Orange County, California. The program ensures ample time to address substance abuse and any associated mental health concerns.
At Safe and Sound Treatment, we believe in a tailored approach. Instead of a one-size-fits-all method, we focus on creating a treatment plan that aligns with your unique addiction history and mental health needs. Our outpatient program integrates cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, meditation, and mindfulness techniques to help combat cravings and address the root causes of addiction.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
We recognize that many individuals face co-occurring disorders where a mental illness accompanies addiction. Addressing both simultaneously is crucial for a successful recovery. Our dual diagnosis treatment focuses on breaking the cycle of self-medication and addressing both the addiction and the underlying mental health disorder.
We believe in a Holistic Approach to Recovery:
- Yoga: Incorporating yoga aids in reducing stress, improving physical health, and enhancing mental well-being.
- Fitness: Our fitness programs, led by supportive trainers, emphasize the physical and psychological benefits of exercise, promoting overall well-being.
- Guided Meditation: Meditation techniques help clear the mind, offering stress relief and a renewed focus on the present.
Types of Addiction Treatment
Safe and Sound Treatment addresses a range of substance use disorders, including:
- Alcohol Addiction: Recognizing the challenges within the Native American community, our team is equipped to provide detox and recovery services while respecting cultural beliefs.
- Heroin Addiction: Our experienced professionals provide a safe environment for recovery from the potent and addictive effects of heroin.
- Cocaine Addiction: We offer specialized treatments to address the physical and psychological impacts of cocaine use.
- Opiate Addiction: With the rising concerns around opioids, especially potent ones like Fentanyl, we're prepared to assist in recovery from such addictions.
- Methamphetamine Addiction: Our tailored treatments address the intense effects of methamphetamine, ensuring a comprehensive recovery approach.
Integrating Generation Red Road’s recovery path into our program allows Safe and Sound Treatment to provide a comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and effective recovery journey for all its participants.
Insurance Coverage for Native American Addiction Treatment
For Native Americans, there are specific insurance providers such as Tribal Health Services and the Indian Health Service. Eligibility for some Indian Health services requires being an American Indian residing in a community under the IHS federal health program’s supervision. If you don’t meet these criteria, private insurance might be an option for both residential and outpatient rehab. Many Native Americans opt for Anthem, a renowned insurance company in California that covers a broad spectrum of medical and psychological services.
Moreover, if you’re insured through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace or your state’s insurance exchange, rest assured that your plan will cover addiction treatment and mental health care services.
